A nice (and more than relevant) piece of research by Jobvite commissioned a study of 2,049 adults aged over 18 across the US, asking them for their opinions on using social media when finding a job.

It discovered that though almost all of those surveyed seemed to be socially active, just 16% used social networks solely to find their most recent job – but a massive 54% have used Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn in some way.

Other key findings from the study were that:

45% of those employed were open to a new job
86% of active and passive job seekers have a social profile
40% are ‘super social’ with over 150 contacts

T’was the Week before Christmas, And all here at Fresh,
Were joyful and festive (as I’m sure you can guess!)
The tree was a-dressed and the CV-s a-sent
and with suits dorned with holly, to the pub they all went.

Presents exchanged, and unwrapped with glee,
With chants of excitement; “Oh! this one’s for me!”
Executive pens, and great gifts galore,
Jokes, Jenga and Jelly, who could really want more?

With the drinks flowing nicely, and the night going well…
But, do my ears deceive me? The faint jingle of bell?

The bells drew in closer, and with a thud on the roof,
Came a bellowy laugh and a stomping of hoof,
The chimney breast rumbled, then a Man dressed in red,
Looking dusty and sooty (and rather well fed!),
He straightened his beard, and and took his bag off his back,
Now what could Dear Santa have had in his sack?

Out came a list, as long as the Nile,
With name after name; he gave a big smile.
“Fresh Resources, I need you, with these good girls and boys
But they need something else, they have enough toys.

They’re all looking for jobs, need your expertise,
Even companies need you – with your super low fees!
Off you must go – go on, borrow my sleigh!
Take the list and your mobiles, be on your away!”

In a flash, he was gone, with instructions galore,
“Name Reindeer in order and the sleigh will be yours”

So off went the Consultants (mince pies in tow!)
Wrapped up warm, list in hand, to battle the snow.
They settled in nicely, (plugged the seatbelts in first!)
And called out the names with a jolly big burst:

“Now, Dasher! Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer, and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”

The sleigh pulled away at speed and precision
With the people on board with one duty and vision.
“Help as many as possible, as well as we can,
Work our way through the list – every woman and man!”

And the rest? Well its history, a story been told.
Of the people at Fresh and their service of gold.
Only one thing to say, (and it only seems right!)

“Merry Christmas to all, and to all, a Good night!”

A huge christmassy thank you to the wonderful Sarah Mitchell for taking the time to pen this yule time rhyme for us – If all goes well and we’re luck enough, you might just hear a bit more from Sarah wearing a ‘Fresh’ new hat of some kind very soon

The core audience for the writing will be advertising agencies that need to develop Facebook apps/pages for their client’s campaigns, namely Tech Directors, Production Directors and Digital Producers.

The newsletter should be a sort of round up of ‘this week on the Facebook developer platform’ in plain English…. In essence it should be https://developers.facebook.com/blog/ written in a way that a ad agency producer can understand and something them that inspires them with ideas for their client campaign.

This could be an excellent opportunity to build a portfolio of writing in this space, and extend ones knowledge in the space with added research and writing.

“How do I clean up my online profile and make it work for me?

You should be very conscious of your digital footprint and remember that nothing can ever really be deleted – someone will have recorded it somewhere. This includes social media profiles such as Facebook and Twitter as well as forums and websites.

The best advice to clean up your online image comes in three areas:

1. Privacy settings on Facebook and Twitter allow you to share your footprint only with those you allow as friends and followers – make sure you control who you accept into this loop. Of course, the most foolproof solution is to behave well and respect these networks.

2. You might not be able to fully delete some things from showing on search engines such as Google, but you can make the most of what shows up first. Use public professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, Plaxo, Viadeo and Xing – fill out your profile, skills, interests and qualifications and you will start to build a much more professional digital footprint.

3. Finally, getting mentioned for extra-curricular activity can be gold dust – comment on blogs and articles, provide quotes for journalists and guest blog on things you’re interested in or know a lot about – everyone is a marketer after all.

Barry Furby, digital recruitment specialist and director, fresh resources”

Closing thoughts:
- What other steps would you take?
- What’s the best advice you could offer a fellow job seeker?
- Do you think employers should check Social Networks of potential employees?

One cannot help being drawn to look at shiny new things online, the next Social Media platform, voucher reward system or Social Q&A Site. They’re all credible in their own way, and maybe offer us functionality that helps us in our day, some entertainment or new connections – happy days!

For the last year or so, something has been floating around the Social Media, Recruitment and HR industry that slightly touches a raw nerve for me, and that is the use of automation in the candidate selction process, namely the use of Klout to screen candidate applications and suitability to do a job…

For those that don’t know about Klout:

‘Klout isn’t about figuring out who is on the “A-list.” We believe that every person who creates content has influence. Our mission is to help every individual understand and leverage their influence.’

Now, I’m not knocking the platform, (others have…) but let’s look at what THEY set out to do ‘understand and leverage their influence’, in context we should add ‘on-line’ to this sentence.

Now we’re in the business of finding digital talent and I’ve not seen a job spec that says the client wants an Account Manager that has an outstanding online influence as priority number 1… Neither have I spoke to a client that wants an individual who comes with more of a stature or ‘influence in the industry’ than actual ability to manage and account and come up with engaging, creative and effective marketing strategy.

Effective candidate selection is a fine crafted art for any business, the staff you hire shape your business, are the face of your business and each one of them is responsible for how successful you are as a business – that’s not new, but it’s worth reminding ourselves.

I think any business even considering using something like Klout for assessing a candidates credentials should scrap the idea and talk to the person in an interview about their ability to fulfil a job specification instead. If the idea still crops up again, then at least look at the job spec in detail and decide if online influence is even relevant in the job spec. If you’re hiring a developer, accountant or any ‘inside the business’ type then look back at what Klout is designer for… then ask yourself the question again…

…person who creates content… & …understand and leverage their influence…

So, Does your CV have Klout? Essentially, I don’t care!

But I do want to know about is you, your skills, your passion for your work and your suitability to fulfil my job criteria. Please can we take a step back; this is about people’s lives, not algorithms, automation or robots!

In contrast, and just to balance this post a bit…

If you can present a case that one’s influence online is a compulsory credential on a job spec, then maybe, just maybe, we might allow one to glance at a Klout score, but bear in mind that its not ful-proof, open to interpretation and manipulation… So honestly, lets not get into the scenario of dismissing job applications based on Klout scores and writing this crap into job specs!

Credit to Nikki Pilkington for the inspiration to write the post

We thought we should empart so knowledge to help the modern day job seeker because there there’s a rapidly expanding list of resources available to the job seeker to find work. But where do you look with dedicated sites such as Chinwag, Only Marketing Jobs and techMAP Jobs for the Digital Marketing sector. Is looking for a job enough? No – The best thing is to be found!

These sites all utilise tools such as Twitter and LinkedIn to build communities and broadcast their latest jobs (join and follow them…), but what about using Social Media to paint YOUR public profile to SELL your skills and help you get FOUND. I think if you’re going to spend some time doing this, then LinkedIn and Twitter are the place to do it. They’re the key tools that I use on the other side of the fence to find job seekers and broadcast my jobs. (My LinkedIn | My Twitter) )

LinkedIn:
Anyone can sign up for LinkedIn, throw a basic profile together and do nothing with it… That’s not going to get you anywhere. LinkedIn is an excellent opportunity to paint a skilled, professional profile of yourself. It should contain all your recent relevant experience, job titles, descriptions, companies, url’s and provide a synopsis of what you can do best.

Sell yourself… If you’re conducting your own job search then why not give hiring managers and recruiters the chance to find you, remember the people search shows search results in relevance order so write about what you do using keywords and that perfect job might just find you. In a punchy way it should contain as much info as your CV!

Use Groups… Search for groups that are relevant to your skill sets and job area, some of the groups have 200,000+ members, so take part in discussions and again, get your name in front of people, build your network and increase that chance of being found.

Connect… If people have been happy to engage in conversation and discussion in the groups then invite them to connect, you never know what relationships might bring. This could be B2B contacts, future clients, people to learn from, people who’re hiring?

Discuss… If you’re in a position where you can, share the fact that you’re looking for work via your status update, if you have been taking part in groups, connecting with people then you have a greater chance of getting referred or recommended for new roles.

Twitter:
Again, anyone can sign up and send 10 random tweets, but you will not get anything from Twitter without investing a little bit of time in actually engaging with people in the communities that you live/work/breath, do not under estimate what can be achieved with twitter, I know several people that have found some really priceless relationships and I have found several of my own.

Personalise it… People buy from and hire People, so a bit of personality is a good thing. Twitter gives you 140 characters to describe yourself in your profile settings. Also, I recommend using the url field to link to your LinkedIn profile, add a profile pic, and the 140 character description of you and what you do.

Download Tweetdeck… For me Twitter doesn’t quite make sense without it, start here…! Create columns for your mentions and DM’s to keep track of conversation, and then more for relevant hashtag searches.

Engage… Status updates that talk to 100,000,000 people but say nothing don’t add value, but finding content that will interest others will, so read NMA, Revolution Mag, Mashable or whatever you trade read and tweet interesting things, You can set up searches and RT (retweet) other peoples links, reply and comment on peoples posts and you will gain followers and build a network of listeners.

Use Hashtags… Many users have a column in their twitter app to find interesting tweets, I have a search ‘#socialmedia’ and ‘#digital’, but also #ukjobs #jobs #web #techMAP #web might be worth a look. If you then tweet and use a hash tag, people that aren’t yet following you will find your tweets and hopefully pick up on your interesting content.

Conclusion: Spend some time, ENGAGE and be part of it, Build YOUR personal brand, and reap the REWARDS.

5 connections and 10 followers on any platform probably isn’t going to get you very far, but it might? Ultimately we’re talking about a numbers game and how to maximise the chance of being found, but I’m confident that a few weeks into your campaign you will have found job leads and found communities that share opportunities and referrals. Social Media is all about transparency and sharing, so why not share things you find and help others too.

I hope this help, of course check out our latest jobs here too!

If you’ve spent more than 10 minutes online recently you’ve only got to type your name into Google and all of a sudden you realise that you have a Digital footprint, what most people don’t realize is that your Digital footprint might tells us more than your CV.

As much as it may be under debate, digital savvy potential employers DO check you out before they hire you so as a job seeker you must make every effort to mange what people can see about you and more importantly we must make an effort to manage what they see – this is now know as Online Personal Branding and it’s a must for any job seeker in the modern age.

So, What can you do to manage what comes up top in Google?

1) Google yourself….

Before we go any further lets see what we’re dealing with. Drunk photos on Facebook with open access, public Dating profiles, posts Grow your own Weed forums – You might have one two or all three of the previous, but the main thing is to find them and do you best to remove/edit it or adjust settings so they’re less findable. You should know that once these details have been recorded by Google they’ll never be gone and they’re stored ‘somewhere’, but we can edit these sources and more importantly we can manage better sources and give you a more attractive and more visible professional personal brand.

2) Join Professional Networking Sites:

Sites such as Linkedin, Plaxo, Viadeo and Xing are leading professional social networks for individuals who want to connect with peers, keep track / start business relationship and learn from others around them. Often the discussion groups are invaluable spaces for finding resources unique to your industry. The result of joining them for your personal brand and Google ranking are invaluable, create and fill out an in depth profile and make sure your name is labeled in full and more often or not this will be very highly ranked if anyone searches for you.

3) PR yourself at any opportunity:

There are websites & blogs across every industry that are constantly looking for new content – this includes writing blogs, written interviews and news reports on activity in the industry. More often than not theses sites will take a story for you and the regular mention of your name on their site will be indexed by Google. From a branding perspective to have been interviewed or be seen as a thought leader in your industry is fantastic news, and any potential employer that see’s you getting your name out there will be proud that you’ll be doing the same as a valued employee of their business.

4) buy ‘yourname.com’ & blog:

Having your own domain enables you to manage a space that depicts ‘you’ exactly as you want to be seen. More importantly it’ll probably be what comes up 1st in Google and draw the attention of anyone checking you out. A blog doesn’t have to be anything more than a profile and a few thoughts here and there, but people are increasing finding it a great way to attract readership and grow a fantastic personal brand.

The above might not be rocket science but how you are seen online can be make or break when looking for a new job, and actually the basics of getting found in the modern day are invaluable.

Incorrect hires must cost the economy £millions every year when you combine job advertising, wages and recruitment fees, and with the rise of Social Recruitment I believe we can start to reduce this wasted spend.

As a follow on from a previous post ‘How to get found in Social Media’, I thought it would be a good idea to put down some ideas around Social Recruitment for the brand employing staff (or the recruitment business sourcing them). It might sound obvious but the days of just posting jobs are gone and I believe that if we raise the bar in the recruitment profession we can greatly reduce unnecessary spend, bring the quality of service in the recruitment industry up and therefore reduce the number of cowboy recruiters spraying biz cards and cold calls around your office!

Before you can dive into Social Recruitment, you must understand what the recruitment process is and then do it well… Specification, Sourcing and Hiring are all equally important.

1) First you must know what you’re looking for [Specification]

The biggest frustration for job seekers, recruiters and others involved with hiring is the whole process stalling because the business doesn’t know what they’re looking for. Ironically isn’t this going to be the same reason that you hire the wrong person, pay them too much and pay a fee for someone you later let go or leaves?

There are ways to get this right, spend time actually writing a job spec and person spec, spend time talking to you recruiter about specific requirements and take their advice – a good recruitment consultant spends 50% or more of his time talking to candidates in the industry – they should be able to provide you 2 invaluable services… Consultation & Recruitment…

2) Recruitment is NOT just posting jobs (and it’s not a HR function) [Sourcing]

If we’ve done a good job of step 1), not just anyone is going to be right for your job. Your specification will determine that you need certain skills and a certain person profile to fit well into the culture of you business. So it makes sense that just posting your job on your site or Monster probably isn’t going to find you Mr/Mrs right… HR processes and policies also won’t find you staff – actively giving your job a presence in the market place and talking to people about it will…! Social Recruitment, like Social Media Marketing is about participation and engagement. Lee Smallwood would say you can measure you ROI as Return on Involvement.

I’ll write a follow up post about the channels, methods of using them and how to capitalize of Social Recruiting tools very soon – Today I wanted to explore the mindset of Recruiting more than the method.

3) Talented staff DONT grow on trees [Hiring]

If we’ve done a good job of step 1), and step 2) and you find that right person – grab them while you can! One of the factors we count into wasted money on recruitment is the time its taken to manage the process!

I’ve worked with 2 clients who believed so strongly in their process of specifying requirements, psychologically profiling and detailed interviews that they have made decisions on the spot and offered jobs in 1st interviews or that evening. they know what they wanted, saw it and hired! You should do the same if you’ve got 1) right!

Closing Thoughts…

> Treat recruitment like a marketing campaign – active and accurately planned.
> Take time to understand what you need… get this right now and save time and money later.
> Participate in the space where your audience is, static job ads will fail.
